Curtis Nysmith originally thought wanted to open a branch of his now shuttered sports bar, Capitol City, in the Westfield Century City mall. However, he instead decided to take over the long vacant Kula sushi space just across the way and debut SmithHouse Tap & Grill, bring aboard a solid eats and drink crew to help run the ship. Check out the now complete restaurant and bar designed by Spacecraft, notice antique brick arches, copper lighting fixtures, flatscreen tvs, and oversized comfy booths with that table-tap beer system first seen at City Tavern.
Top Chef alum Angelo Sosa, who most recently consulted on the menu at the revamped Malibu Inn, here works to elevate American staples. SmithHouse's custom-blend burger is topped with a bone marrow and parmesan crust, there's a slow-baked salmon served with charred bok choy and a lemon-yuzu butter, and the dry-aged New York strip steak is glazed in a ginger-soy emulsion and sprinkled with five spice walnuts.
As far as cocktails are concerned, Damion Windsor and Jason Bran of The Roger Room plus mixologist Simon Ford worked out the list, eight vintage libations and eight more modern takes. Expect to find a Manhattan, an Old Fashioned, and a Pimm's Appeal made from Pimm's and lemongrass-infused tea.
One of SmithHouse's major highlights is its 120 (!) beers available on draft, some of which are available self-serve via table taps. After a slew of opening delays, SmithHouse should now debut toward the end of this week.
