Welcome to Hokusai, the new restaurant that replaced the tired Continental in Beverly Hills. Named for a Japanese impressionist painter and wood engraver, the space has few reminders of its past Matt Damon/Ben Affleck-owned life. There's a giant mirrored column with Japanese script in the middle of the room, an open kitchen, lots of leather banquettes, all very contemporary. While the official press release touts a French-Euro influence on the menu, others say it's mostly straightforward sushi, albeit very fresh and beautifully presented. Items of note from the "kitchen" menu: kobe beef cheek stew, foie gras with eggplant and miso, lobster with sliced truffle and cherry vinaigrette. There's a weekday happy hour from 5pm to 7pm.
