Dining in Solitude at Osteria Mozza: Good or Bad?
Thursday, August 30, 2007

Osteria Mozza tried to take things slow in the beginning. First they only took a certain number of reservations for those lucky enough to get through the phone lines, then a few more opened up, and even more as the weeks went on. Now, as the staff feels more confident and everyone undoubtedly wants to make more money, a small addition to the main dining room was made available for extra seating. But according to some Hounds, sitting in this room is like sitting at the "kiddie table" or worse:

No one was being seated in that room when we went on July 21. In fact, we were speculating that it might be a handicapped entrance or a door for celebrities to slip in through with less notice. We didn't realize it was the the entrance to the Mozza detention hall. Definitely specify you don't want to dine with the short bus kids in there. I am almost positive they won't give you a firm yes that they won't stick you in the shame hole room, though.
The room probably wouldn't be so bad as long as the staff remembers people are sitting in there. According to GM David Rosoff, that room is neither the "kiddie-table room" or where the "shame room," it's the "patio room," and one staffer called it "the Mario room," which we think has something to do with the rolicking party he threw there when the restaurant opened. But as for asking not to sit in the back room, Rosoff says, "If guests request specific locations, we do our best to accommodate but never guarantee." In a word, you're SOL.

My favorite part is how they can't win. Week one everyone complained that they couldn't get a reservation, week eight they complain about sitting in the retard room...

You can SMOKE in that room. That's why Mario likes it and that's why we liked it last week, too.

I wrote the Chowhound post mentioned above, and I also sent Mozza an e-mail the day after expressing my displeasure at the experience via their website. It's nice to see that the manager can reply to Eater when they drag my post from another website out onto their site but not to my comment personally. Just more of that great Mozza service for you...

Man, I read this post right before my dinner at Mozza on Thursday; and sure enough that's where I was seated. No problems - the server was knowledgeable about everything we asked and attentive, the sommelier recommended a wonderful wine, it was relatively quiet (the roar from the other room could be heard), and our dinner was excellent.

Sucks that you had such a bad experience - mine was top notch.

Woolsey,
I noticed that you first complained that it was so loud in the other room, and then complained about being in the quiet room. You said the service was about the same speed both nights-- "it just felt longer"-- then you added that the people you came with didn't make it easier and you were just sitting there between courses with nothing to talk about.
Who's fault is that?
And isn't the "kiddie table" your spin on it? Certainly the restaurant doesn't seem to feel that way-- perhaps we care too much about the appearance of where we sit in a restaurant.
I personally prefer quiet to loud so I can talk with the people I came with. If you have great food and company, and you're not by the trash bin, who cares where we sit? Enjoy life!
Love,
Aunt Flo
