CASA BIANCA OWNER SAM MARTORANA PASSES
Sam Martorana, owner of Casa Bianca, an Eagle Rock institution, has died. Sam and his wife Jennie opened Casa Bianca in 1955 and created the pie that garnered awards and recognition as the best "every man" pizza in the city for many years, most notably in the food section of the Los Angeles Times and the yearly restaurant issue of Los Angeles Magazine.
Services for Sam will be held this coming Saturday, October 13, at 11:00 a.m. at Eagle Rock Baptist Church, located at the northeast corner of Colorado Boulevard and Hartwick Street in Eagle Rock.
Casa Bianca really is an institution. Sam and his wife Jennie opened the restaurant in 1955 and little has changed since. It's classic, it's neighborhood, it's always packed. Mention the name to almost any pizza-loving Angeleno and debate automatically ignites. Guess who always wins. Our thoughts are with the Martorana family.
· Casa Bianca History [Casa Bianca]
I worked at Casa before "the review" and after. The family was- and is- always present. However good the pizza was, or for me, the money I made, will always be second to how good they were to me, and how much I learned from Sam and Jennie about devotion and hard work. I hope they continue to prosper- and -seriously- try an eggplant, garlic and fresh tomato pie next time you're there!
