The Vermin, They Love the Third Street Promenade
Tuesday, November 6, 2007

There's something about the LA Public Health restaurant closure list that's just so...fun. Informative, yes, but among the scores of small ethnic strip-mall eateries all over town, you get a handful of places that we actually know. And then there are the neighborhood outbreaks that kind of give us the willies. Those pesky vermin, they're everywhere. Here, then, some highlights from the most recent report (as of 10/26):

Santa Monica had an outbreak of critter infestation: Bravo Cucina, Falafel King, Gaucho Grill in August, and the Buca di Beppo on 2nd Ave., and Cabo Cantina and Falafel King on the Promenade were closed for a few days in October. Hop Li on Pico was closed down in August for vermin, and just reopened a few weeks ago. In Echo Park, the Brite Spot was closed for a week in August. Todai at the Beverly Center was closed in August and September for infestation. And just to prove it can happen anywhere: Circa 55 at the Beverly Hilton hotel closed for three days in September.

A reader tipped us off that Geisha House was closed for vermin a couple weeks ago, but when we called to verify, the shocked hostess said they were not closed by the department of health. Wrong. Closed from 10/16 to 10/19 for "vermin harborage." Lesson for today: Never lie when you know there's a public record. Vegan Kitchen in Van Nuys was closed for a day in September for "Serious/Repeat Violations or Interfering with Inspector." Eat some cheese, people.
