Mega Dish: Greenleaf, Oba Sushi Izakaya, Third & Olive, Ap-Petite, Canali Cafe, Lot 44 Coffee and MORE
Friday, May 9, 2008

So many restaurants opening everywhere, so little time. Care to share a debut for The Dish? Drop it right here in the tip jar, please. Thank you and come again.

BEVERLY HILLS: The Plywooded Greenleaf Gourmet Chopshop spark some reader interest, which generated our interest, which generated the newsletter frenzy this week. The gourmet, eco-friendly, fast-cas spot has salads, sandwiches, sides like golden beets with goat cheese, roasted white truffle potatoes, green lentil salad, as organic as it can be, seasonal and local. They're using energy-efficient cars, scooters and bicycles for delivery, too. Open for lunch only, 11am-4pm. (9671 Wilshire Blvd., Beverly Hills, 310.246.0756)

PASADENA: Plywooded just a couple weeks ago, a former Sushi of Naples manager opened Oba Sushi Izakaya on Glenarm near the 110 entrance. For those living in the area, the promise of new and maybe even better sushi and izakaya without having to trek to Little Tokyo or the somewhere west is really appealing. Lunch Mon-Fri, dinner daily. (181 E. Glenarm St #110, Pasadena, 626.799.8543)

PASADENA: Ap-Petite, a little European bakery opened in the storefronts sandwiched between the Ralph's and the gas station on Lake Avenue. There's not much to the bright and clean space, and the baked goods aren't everyday pastries: savory and sweet filled mini-croissants, pogi, a Hungarian savory pastry topped with cheese, sesame seed, or bacon, and open-face sandwiches. And cheap! (140 N Lake Ave, 626.744.0337)

DOWNTOWN: A tipster checked out the newly opened Lot 44 Coffee and said the space is clean, bright ant "the pastries looked good." Located in the Douglas Building, it will serve as a flagship for owner Ariel Graham, who hopes to eventually expand in SoCal. The coffee is made from organic, pesticide-free beans from small lot purveyors, the baristas are trained to pull each shot individually, and there's free WiFi. (257 S. Spring St, 213-626-4646; previously)

LITTLE TOKYO: There might be Pinkberry and CeFiore, but they aren't self-serve! Yogurtland opened a few weeks ago. (130 S Central Ave, 213.687.0733; website)

BURBANK: Lasher's Steakhouse, which didn’t last too long, is now Third & Olive according to the LAT. Miki Zivkovic, chef and owner of Burbank's bustling Bistro Provence, bought it lock, stock and barrel and barely changed a thing. Except the menu. (250 E. Olive Ave, 818.846.3900)

STUDIO CITY: Keeping it all in the family: Andreas Krankl, son of Gail Silverton and nephew to Nancy, opened Press Panini just up the street from his mother's Gelato Bar. (4389 Tujunga Blvd., 818.487.2564)

VENICE: Taking over the Café Marguerite space near the canals, Canali Café finally made its debut. It's owned by Osteria Latini's chef/owner Paolo Pasio. (123 Washington Blvd, 310.822.5379)
