Signs of the times [Photos by Tom Andrews for LAist]
Frontiers magazine is reporting that Marjorie "Margie" Christoffersen has stepped down as manager of El Coyote restaurant and resigning as a board member over all the Prop 8 hooplah. The controversy started when the LGBT community found out Christoffersen donated $100 to the Yes on Prop 8 campaign which led to boycotts and one Beverly Boulevard-traffic-snarling protest last month. After a press conference (that didn't go so well), she left town. Another manager said of Christoffersen, whose mother is described on the El Coyote website as the "matriarch" of the restaurant, “Everybody is kind of used to her walking around the restaurant with a water pitcher going from table to table to table...I guess that part is no longer going to exist.” At one point one manager told us that, even with all the negative press and boycotts, it was "business as usual." Obviously that wasn't entirely true or Christoffersen wouldn't have left. But at least now everyone is free to ingest neon-orange cheese and cheap margaritas once again.
