Kokomo Cafe’s (Beverly Blvd.) claim to fame was its turn as the Peach Pit on tv mainstay 90210, and this week, just in time for 09.02.10, Kokomo unveiled its second location, K2, on W. Sunset. There was some speculation as to whether owner Alfredo Diaz would operate this location, but that’s been put to rest -- he marches about the space like a school principal, casting instructive glances here and there. Though it was only their first few days of service, K2 was packed all weekend. The few patio seats and spacious booths inside were popular with groups while couples vied for the comfy diner-style bar seats. Servers scurried about turning tables, handing out menus, trying to keep up.
The menu is a grid of Californian mainstays, divided up into Grains, Eggs, Salads, and Sandwiches. For breakfast, there’s granola, pumpkin pancakes, a chicken and waffle rendition, and predictable egg dishes like green eggs and ham and a tofu scramble. The rest of the day, pick from sandwiches like a Fish Filet on Sesame Challah, their “famous” BLT or a tuna burger. Salads like a Crispy Chopped Chicken and “Kobb” manage to look interesting on a menu that claims to use only sustainable seafood and farmer’s market produce. The coffee is from Gavina in Vernon, CA and the tea is certified organic from T Salon. There are smoothies too. But what’s up with them charging a $1 for tap water? It’s a fancy filtration system that eliminates the need for plastic or glass bottles. Hmm. Consider us curious. K2 is open now from 8AM until 5PM. Starting Wednesday, they will be open until 10PM each evening.
