Tinga on La Brea, the Jonathan Gold-approved Mexican cafe from chef Jerry Baker, has had high hopes of extending its tacos to the westside. And, although the deal is not officially complete, if it comes to fruition, Tinga will land in the most unlikely of Santa Monica locales. Have you ever been to Renee's Courtyard? It's a maze of an indoor/outdoor dive bar and eatery on Wilshire, around since 1981, that's filled with creepy dolls and looks like your wacky aunt's apartment. Though known more for cheap drinks, Renee's actually serves food, too. And, soon that food could be black bean nachos, chorizo and potato quesadillas, and braised short rib tacos. Hopefully Baker brings back his tortilla chip dessert with caramel sauce and vanilla ice cream. But, for fans of Renee's, fear not. Renee's will stay Renee's, just cleaned up with greatly improved food and drink.
