Los Angeles sure loves its health food, and Grassroots Alchemy in West Hollywood is yet another feather in the fruit-and-juice-laden cap of this city's green scene. Opened some time in mid July, the place offers everything from pro-biotic sodas, restorative tonics, raw foods, and superfood ice cream smoothies.
Think of this place as the kind of Hogwarts meets 70's style health food cafe, with a nearly encyclopedic collection of shrubs, herbs, spices, and more. Consider The Energizer, made with deer antler (is that vegan? probably not), maca, astragalus, cacao, he shou wu, lucuma, English toffee stevia, coconut oil, and gynostema tea. If that thing doesn't make you want to trek up Mt. Everest, just about nothing will.
So while there are a few oddball healthy items, there are still some tasty ice cream concoctions (pricey though, around $13-17) that will fill in for a non-guilt inducing dessert. Open 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily, with closure at 9 p.m. on Sunday evenings.
