LITTLE TOKYO:Angelenic has deets on the new Spitz going into the Hikari Apartment on 2nd Street (gallery above). Unlike the Eagle Rock original, this new location will be restaurant by day, lounge by night---beer and wine, DJ, later hours. The Doner Kebab stays. Expect a September debut. [PLYWOOD]
BRENTWOOD: Chatting with Suzanne Goin at the Angeleno Chef's Night Out party, the very preggers chef told us her and Caroline Styne's restaurant (still won't divulge the name) in the former Hamlet space on San Vicente is "coming along." She's due in October, the resto by early 2009. [PLYWOOD]
We just chatted with Campanile GM Jay Perrin who, with Mark Peel, are planning a mixology mecca in the former Oasis space on La Brea. Yesterday it was suggested that this new restaurant/bar will open in August, which is partially true. Perrin says they're hoping for August 2009. Construction won't even start for a few more months. He tells us they intend on elevating the art of the cocktail to heights yet unseen in these parts, think New York's Milk & Honey or the Pegu Club, but even beyond that. "Milk & Honey times 10."
If there's one thing we've learned in our oh-so-many years of restaurant working and watching: Nothing's set in stone. Last year we learned that Campanile chef/owner Mark Peel and his GM and wine director Jay Perrin would open a new wine bar concept in the former Oasis space on La Brea. Several months later, a reader spotted a "for lease" sign on the location, and Perrin told us they were taking the whole shebang to Culver City. We haven't heard much until today: Peel and Perrin decided to stay in the Oasis location but it's no longer a wine bar and now all about mixology.
If you think just because chefs are nominated for James Beard Awards they're impersonal, hard to talk to, god-like, Savory Tidbits has quick little videos of some of the nominees, including LA's own Suzanne Goin (Outstanding Chef), Mark Peel (Outstanding Restaurant) and David Myers (Best Chef, Pacific). Each talks about naming their restaurants, the vibe ("it's like coming to our house for dinner"..."feels like a small town where everyone knows everybody"), their cooking styles ("It's not Japanese, not French. It's just a modern approach to cooking...personal."), and a glimpse inside plus some dishes. See, they're just people.
