Table 8 tabled for now

Before we launched, someone tipped us off that once hotter-than-hot hot spot Table 8 was closing and only gave the staff about 10 days notice. Brutal. If they didn't know it was coming, we did: Chef/owner/media darling Govind Armstrong was slated to open a Table 8 outpost in the new Regent South Beach hotel in Miami. Some chefs would let one restaurant stand while they attempted to open another across the country; at least Govind knows his limits. According to the official website, the Melrose original, open since August 2003, has not closed for good—it's just getting a remodel by designer du jour Thomas Schoos, with a December re-opening slated.

We're pretty sure that won't happen, and here's why: Govind's South Beach restaurant just opened on December 6, but only for guinea pigs hotel guests. The opening, as usually happens, was delayed; it was supposed to be spring, then October, then November. Plus, there was a bad luck-plagued opening party on November 7.

As for our own Table 8, calls are in to all the right people to find out a tentative opening date. Of course, if any of you Eater sleuths know, please share

UPDATE: We heard back from the only Table 8 people we can reach... in Miami. They have no idea when LA Table 8 will reopen, and they said to "say Table 8 Miami will open on December 18." Oops again.
