Encounter, the groovy space-age restaurant at LAX, closed last night. The arches supporting the structure are unstable, and by unstable, they mean a 1,000-pound chunck of stucco fell off. The arches haven't been renovated since they were built in the 1950s. Really? All those millions of dollars pumped into LAX and no one thought to look at the 50-year-old arches that HOLD UP a restaurant? LAX officials have their fingers crossed that Encounter will only be closed for six months to renovate.
