Post-Plywood: Abode Pre-Opening Party

We popped into Santa Monica's new Abode Restaurant & Lounge for a little pre-opening fun this weekend. The first thing we noticed was a sign that said E!'s Dr. 90201 was on-site filming. Why the plastic surgery show? One of the doctors from the show, Dr. Jason Diamond, is an investor. We're told he was there (we successfully dodged the filming crew), so was Grey's fake TV doctor, Eric "McSteamy" Dane. We were more fascinated with the affable owners, Anastasia Israel and husband Kelly Gleason, both extremely passionate about this huge new project, a complete 180 from the eclectic Anastasia's Asylum, which they owned for 14 years.

Designed by Franklin Studios, the space is a combination of earthy, sustainable products and sexy mod design: smooth travertine walls, recycled wood beams, custom-designed black and white chandeliers, indoor cabana booths, high-backed red leather chairs, and geometric slat walls separating the lounge and dining areas. In a way, it's almost an extension of Tengu (same designers), but Abode feels more exclusive because it's so hidden. Food from chef Dominique Crenn's menu was passed, but we only tasted lamb chops with mint "caviar" and chocolate mousse laced with saffron...at least that's what we remember. We definitely remember drinking wine. The night was just enough teaser for its full opening, slated for next week, April 16.
