Let's start a new holiday, shall we? We'll call it Mahalo May, in honor of the death and resurrection of Trader Vic's at the Beverly Hilton. Every May 3, we shall drink Mai Tais and Scorpion Bowls. And eat massive amounts of snack mix and pupu platters. For today, folks, Trader Vic's that died so suddenly on Monday will live again, if only in memorabilia and cocktail menus, on the pool level of the hotel. Cocktail hour commences at 5pm and goes until 2am. No, it won't be the same, and yes, the original 1955 location is a total and sad loss. We'll take what we can get for now.
On a side note, Mike at Franklin Avenue considered whether this is a permanent or temporary fix. It does have the air of a quick fix, doesn't it? He asked John Maata, who sits on the board of Trader Vic's, whether the iconic restaurant will look for a new location. The answer:
Trader Vic’s is having a big re-birth. This year we opened in Scottsdale, and Seattle. We are about to open in Dallas and Las Vegas will open in the Fall —- at a great location on the strip. Trader Vic’s Shanghai opened on New Year’s Eve. Trader Vic management is actively working LA, although nothing specific is lined-up yet.The call we placed on Monday to a spokesperson for Trader Vic's was finally returned this morning (no rush). We asked about a possible new location and---talk about stopping a conversation cold---he said, "I can't comment on that right now." Doesn't mean "no," right?
