This was not the year for Los Angeles at the Oscars of the food world. The James Beard Awards took place in New York this weekend, with the big restaurant and chef awards doled out last night (see it through the eyes of our NYC siblings here). LA wasn't widely represented to begin with, and only one Angeleno walked away with a prize: Jesse Katz, senior writer at Los Angeles magazine, won the M.F.K. Fisher Distinguished Writing Award for his October '06 article on taco trucks. Cut and Spago's exec chef Lee Hefter were nominated, and Mozza for graphic design (the only way to slip the too-new restaurant in this year). In one journalism category (newspaper or magazine review or critique), two of the three nominees were LA writers (LA mag's Patric Kuh and Angeleno's Brad Johnson), but the third person won. Still, congratulations to all the nominees and winners. We'll get 'em next year.
