Ain't nothin like the real thing, baby...
The Frozen Yogurt War marches on, and we, Eater LA, have officially joined the ranks. Although our obsession has undeniably tailspinned out of control of late, in truth, we never tasted the Pinkberry or any other newfangled fruit/color/berry-named frozen yogurt. We've been fascinated by the onslaught, not the product. Alas, today was the day, and for good reason, too: We'll be on NPR's "Day to Day" show this week dutifully eating Pinkberry for the first time with host/reporter Alex Cohen. (
We'll let you know when it airs The piece ran...without us.). In a word: Eh. The froyo is OK, but we still don't see what all the fuss is about. And about 15 minutes after we left the Studio City store, we had a funky taste in our mouth, kind of like a fake sugar film. We promptly high-tailed it to Gail Silverton's Gelato Bar and tasted what a real frozen dessert should taste like; pomegranate, blood orange, tiramisu, hell, even the yogurt gelato was pleasing. No comparison, friends. And that nasty Pinkberry taste is long gone.
No doubt our opinion will not stop the masses and/or onslaught: A double Pinkberry Groupie announcement hit the inbox today telling us that the new Silver Lake location (2829 Hyperion Ave., a mere one mile from the Los Feliz location) has opened. Eating L.A. also has the scoop, er, swirl on that one. And the Brentwood location opened (11711 Gorham Blvd.). This weekend, the Topanga Canyon store opened (6600 Topanga Canyon Blvd.) But our big brother got some news (we must've inherited the Pinkberry gene from him) that the Little Tokyo shop, which looked to be opening any day now, has actually sat idle for weeks. Is this a froyo freeze? Doubt it. Pinkberry: Oozing to a neighborhood near you.
