Adventures in Shilling: Table 8 and Best of Citysearch

A reader points out to us that the Best of Citysearch voting started for Los Angeles restaurants, a marketing tool we've always loathed. Every year, the same restaurants put up the same stickers in their windows, the same restaurants are nominated for the same categories, the sales' reps vote for their clients, etc. Anyway, it looks like "the people" really heart Table 8 because it is nominated in 17 categories. Some make sense: bar menu, date night (we'll give it to them), and late night menu. But organic, seafood, salad?? The full list:

Bar Menu
Cheap Eats
Comfort Food
Date spot
Family-Friendly Dining
Fine Dining
French Fries
Group Dining
Late-Night Dining
Organic Dining
Romantic Dining
Salad
Seafood
Small Plates
Special Occasion Dining
Steak
Wine List

We'll say it again: Salad?? Once you click into the Table 8 profile, if you know how to read a Citysearch page (not always easy), you'll note the restaurant is an advertiser, also with a five-star rating, whatever that means. Every Best of nominee has five stars, even The Pantry, Pie n Burger, and Nick's Coffee Shop on Pico. Shill probability: 99.46%.
