Plywood: Owen's Market Gets New Life

CENTURY CITY/BEV HILLS---We're not rich, nor do we live on the Westside, so we've never been to Owen's Market. From what we gather, it was a good neighborhood market with a real butcher and delivery service; the kind of place where the staff knew your name, your likes and dislikes, which door to enter when they deliver to avoid the wrath of Pookie, your giant Rottie. The market's been around since 1957 but closed recently due to new ownership. Turns out celebrity event planner Mindy Weiss bought it and plans to turn it into a high-end gourmet shop with take-and-go food, organic fruits and vegetables, a good butcher counter, and spirits and wines. She's wrangling some of her hoity-toity florist and caterer friends to help with the goods, the same ones she uses for weddings and parties for people like Eva and Tony, Jessica and Nick, etc. Online ordering and delivery will be a huge part of the business. The store is currently closed for renovations but should open (she hopes) in late-October with a new "French country market" look. [Owen's Market by Mindy Weiss, 9769 W Pico Blvd., 310.553.8181]
