South Bay Plywood: Michi Becoming Mucho, Sharkeez Update

MANHATTAN BEACH: When Michi Takahashi packed up earlier this year to go back to Japan, it was rumored that his popular pan-Asian Michi restaurant went through a bidding war between the brothers who own Blue 32 in Hermosa Beach and Mike Zislis, who owns MB's trendy Shade Hotel and Rock 'N Fish restaurant. Looks like Zislis won: He's opening Mucho Ultima Mexicana, a "high-end Mexican restaurant," in the former Michi spot on November 14 if all goes as planned. [EaterWire]

HERMOSA BEACH: Speaking of Hermosa, we just came across this little nugget from PubClub.com about Sharkeez, which has been closed since a May 2006 fire. "SHARKEEZ RENOVATION UPDATE: The expansion has been approved and owners expect construction – which will include an upper level and balcony – to begin in the next couple of months. From there, it must be approved by the Coastal Commission, a process that could last a few more months. The earliest opening estimate is early '08." There was much controversy surrounding that location because the owner wanted to expand, some were calling foul on the fire, blahblah. It still doesn't look like smooth sailing, but at least there's movement. [EaterWire]
