EaterWire: Tonga Hut Celebrates 50 Tiki Years, Fried Chicken Nights at BLD and Campanile

NORTH HOLLYWOOD: Just as a new generation of tiki begins (the new Luau opens tonight in Beverly Hills; a new Trader Vic's will open at L.A. Live next year), the Tonga Hut celebrates its 50th anniversary this Saturday night (Oct. 25). Ace and Ed Libby may or may not have opened the bar in 1958 (no records to prove it but longtimers swear they've been going since 1958), when the neighborhood was still considered swanky and the Polynesian was in its heyday. After years of disarray, Jeremy Fleener and Ana Reyes bought the place in 2005 and started the restoration, which they say is an ongoing process. Expect DJs, vintage goods and specialty drinks at the soiree (8pm-2am). [LAT]

MID-CITY: Some BLD News: First, there's a new chef. Diana Stavaridis, who's been sous chef since right after opening (and a line cook at Grace before that), has replaced Mike Garber. Second, a few weekly specials have been added like fried chicken Tuesdays and flatbread pizzas on Thursdays; plus milkshakes every third Sunday of the month.
