Though it's been open for a couple weeks, yesterday Shallom and Jill Berkman welcomed anyone and everyone to an open house at their new Urth Caffe location at the Barker Block downtown. Because it was so packed, we couldn't really gauge the loveliness of the space, but the best of what we saw were the outside patio and the windows that looked into the roasting facility off of the main room. The roaster was going, coffee geniuses were on hand to explain Urth's organic coffee trade, and the huge bakery space was filled with people turning out enough croissants, pies, tiramisu, cookies and other pastries to feed the approximately 8,000 people (estimated by how much they gave away) who came throughout the day.
There were renderings for a new Pasadena location on display, and Shallom tells us they're still in the design planning phase, but the building will be on the SE corner of Colorado Boulevard and Madison Avenue, just east of the Paseo Colorado in the Playhouse District (the corner where Zinky's Shoe Repair currently lives). They're building from the ground up and are stil in the design phase, but he touts a courtyard, balconies overlooking the Rose Parade route, and "Pasadena Spanish-style" architecture. Projected opening: At least 14-18 months.
