What does Jonathan Gold think of the new old Cole's? For many reasons, better than before: "Are the sandwiches too small, too inartfully constructed? Perhaps. Is the bacon-spiked potato salad tinted an alarming shade of orange? Definitely, although it is about a million times better than the grisly potato salad at the old Cole’s. Is Spaten on tap a fair substitute for the absent Ritterbrau? It will do. The pies, apple and pecan, are good too. And the bar, grown suddenly serious under the supervision of New York bar-chef legend Sasha Petraske among others, is splendid — the old-fashioned was perhaps the best of my whiskey-soaked life."
