Good News/Bad News: Provecho

New, 8 comments

One of the latest "modern Mexican" spots to open Downtown this year, Provecho softly debuted for lunch earlier this month and added dinner a couple weeks later. If you recall, there were no practice runs---just a cold open---which is probably why general consesus is that Gabe Morales' food is better than the service (so far), but most figure they'll go back to give it a second chance. On, then, to the good, bad and meh:

Good News: "While almost everything was yummy (except I wouldn't order the tortilla soup again - too creamy and thick), the table favs were: chicken flautas (best flautas ever!), chipotle chicken sopes, pork al pastor and the torta sliders. I wish were daring enough to try to raw bar, but that will have to wait until my husband and I hit up the spot again. Overall, a nice contemporary Mexican restaurant?" [Yelp]

Meh News: "Decor is modern, comfortable, but a little cold. Carpet is horrible? Wait staff was attentive, nearly overly-attentive, I overheard that it was our waiter’s first dinner service. Music was too loud, possibly due to lack of background conversation, but invasive nonetheless?.Could merit a second viewing, probably won’t become a regular spot. In an inconvenient location which could mean it’s a short time addition to the downtown landscape." To be fair, his dining partner is "Surly." [A Contrarian Eats]

Not so Great News: "My coworkers and I went to Provecho last night for our holiday party and although the food was delicious, our waiter was horrible? he didn’t know the menu at all. He hadn’t tried things he couldn’t tell us what ingredients were in certain items, he was obviously flustered and made it clear that he was reciting certain lines? bad news for a new restaurant, especially when fancy Mexican is a harder sell." Really Bad News: "Walked in and the hostess started to hand me and my guest the wine list and menus as if we were at Denny's. Food order was incorrect. Had to go back. Sat at the bar, and the bartender never asked if we wanted another round. Which we would have easily had two more rounds. Had no desire to spend another dollar there. Decor is bland and corporate. I give this place a year." [Yelp]

Good But Obviously a Shill: " The space is amazing. A lot fancier than I pictured but very comfortable. We were told by our waiter that the idea was to share plates and we did just that. Duck sopes, queso fundido, al pastor tacos, chicken mole, a few ceviches and a rock shrimp cocktail later and we were in a fabulous food coma! The fresh and fat housemade tortillas were awesome! We tried several of the signature cocktails as well and were impressed that they were using real juices!" [Yelp]
