EaterWire: Akbar SM Shuttered, Wokcano Downtown, New Korean on Sawtelle

New, 2 comments

SANTA MONICA: Per the tearful, heartfelt goodbye sent to our inbox, Akbar on Wilshire Blvd. closed its doors about three weeks ago. We called the MDR location and a staffer said they "sold the location" and thinks a sushi restaurant is planned. (Unrelated but funny: Try not to get 318 confused with 310. We misdialed the phone number and some poor schlub in western Louisiana unfortunately gets this call all the time: "You mean the Akbar restaurant in California?") The Indian mini-chain still has locations in Marina del Rey, Old Town Pasadena and Hermosa Beach, and will perhaps reopen a fourth. [EaterWire]

WEST LA: A new Korean restaurant is opening at 213 Sawtelle Blvd, just north of Olympic. Tofu Villa "offers various salads and bibimbobs, traditional Korean vegetable rice bowls for those seeking healthier choices in meals." Possibly opening today. [EaterWire]

DOWNTOWN: After months of delays, Wokcano on the ground floor of the Barker Brothers Building at 7th and Flower is ready to go. Managers just have to retrain all the staff they hired in December, get final final approvals, and then they'll be ready to go, hopefully by next week. This is the largest in the chain and they plan to serve until 2am daily. [Angelenic]
