Food & Wine magazine announces their Best New Chefs for 2008 tomorrow, its 20th year celebrating the country's best up-and-coming restaurant talent, and we have it on very good authority that Los Angeles does not represent again this year. Semi-local chef Gavin Kaysen, then chef de cuisine at El Bizcocho near San Diego (now exec chef at Cafe Boulud in New York), was on the list in 2007. There were a few local chefs in the running for '08, and we can think of a few that should be, but they didn't make the cut. Maybe (sigh) next year.
For fun, a look back at former local Best New Chefs:
Nobu Matsuhisa (1989)
Mark Peel and Nancy Silverton (1990)
Celestino Drago (1993)
Josiah Citrin, Raphael Lunetta (1997)

Suzanne Goin (1999)
Tim Goodell (2000)
Suzanne Tracht (2002)
David Myers (2003)
Eric Klein (2004)
Christophe Eme (2005)
