Table 8 Evolution: Closing Dates, New Concepts

When Table 8 closed for renovations and reopened last year to reveal what we affectionately called a "goth coffee shop," there was no doubt that something went terribly, terribly awry in conceptualizing the new vibe. Was it a designer gone wrong? Did the owners not stand firm ground? Either way, the black leather-purple look just didn't feel right with Govind Armstrong's seasonal California menu. There was a serious identity crisis going on, which more often than not leads to a quick demise. So it came as no shock when we found out Table 8 will close in its original location and move to the Chocolat space on the corner of Melrose and Kilea.

Smart move, really. That space is twice as big with a huge patio and should suit Armstrong's menus quite well, as long as designer Thomas Schoos stays out if it (he is). So what's to happen with the original Table 8 space? Staying in the family. It will become a "burger bar" called 8 oz: gourmet burgers, organic meats, shakes, cocktails. The decor will be completely changed, going back to the lighter brighter days of yore. Table 8 will close on May 31 and reopen at 8155 Melrose Avenue later this summer. The quick and dirty changeover at 7661 Melrose will happen sooner: 8 oz is expected to open by the end of June.
