The James Beard Foundation just released its first State of American Cuisine, a study attempting to figure out if American cuisine actually exists. They surveyed chefs, journalists, academics and foundation members to discover that there is indeed an "American cuisine," but no one can agree on what it is. "Cowboy food and recent immigrant dishes" share space on the national plate, but the most American food of all is the hamburger. Download the full report on their official site. [JBF via Eater]
