Nickel Diner from Angelenic

DOWNTOWN: As promised last week, the Nickel Diner is now open for breakfast and lunch (dinner to follow this fall). The menu features "fresh, simple food" like spaghetti and meatballs, ricotta pancakes, barbecue pulled pork, Sloppy Joes, homemade pies, cupcakes and donuts. (524 S Main St; website).

WEHO: The gift and wine shop Venokado will have its grand opening Friday (8/29). This is the brick-and-mortar offshoot of Molly and Susan Brink's online source Maxine Gifts, but now with wines selected by Susan, who's also the wine director for Dominick's and Little Dom's. Gifts run the gamut from table and kitchen items to candles to baby stuff, but locals should appreciate the wines: There will be about 250 labels once everything's running full-speed, mostly boutique and cult wines and a lot under $20, and some already chilled for quick grab-and-go. (7714 Fountain Ave, 323.850.1600; website)
