The Dish: Pizzeria Ortica in the O.C.

New, 7 comments

We don't always reserve our Dish opening reports for Orange County, but this one has an LA hook: David Myers and the Food Arts Group opened Pizzeria Ortica near the South Coast Plaza today. We popped on down for the opening over the weekend, and the pizza and pasta that chef Steve Samson (formerly Valentino and more recently Sona, and who's totally at the helm) is whipping up are, well, something. The custom-designed wood-burning oven reaches 900 degrees which means some mighty fine crust---topped with guanciale, asparagus, a simple margherita---all with a chewy crispness and perfectly blistered around the edges. When Ortica opens here in the orginal Boule space on La Cienega (they say April, we'll say June), it will definitely add to the pizza wars. One can't live on Mozza alone.
