Is the down economy seriously causing Americans to fatten up from eating cheapo candy? It might be a ludicrous claim but sales of high-end dark chocolate are only up 2.2% this year, as compared to 35% between 2007 and 2008, while Hershey’s had a sales rise of 51.4% at the end of 2008, and has since had an additional 20% jump in profits. Geez. And, the world must be coming to an end because Pinkberry and Red Mango are apparently the saving grace. Americans consider the two froyo chains to be purveyors of "health food," so people have been swapping out full dinners for these "healthy" smaller treats. [TDB]
