Status: Opened Sunday
The Hillstone Group (Houston's, Gulfstream, R+D Kitchen) has just unveiled its most recent concept, South Beverly Grill. Located on South Beverly Drive, the restaurant adds a new lunch, dinner and bar option to the neighborhood. Chefs and ownership want diners to know that some favorites from Houston's and Gulfstream are on offer here. Eater was invited to take a tour of the space, which soft opened on Sunday, and check out the new menu. The dining room, quite frankly, looks a lot like a Houston's with its Southwestern accents, just-right lighting, black leather, dark woods, and silver accents.
Waitstaff wears the same Hillstone Group uniforms (black and more black) and they all have that friendly smile. There's a lot to like, which is why this restaurant group, while maintaining a low profile, is so successful and continues to expand. The menu sounds like fun with Fried Oysters St Charles with creamed spinach, artichokes and lemon aioli ($12) and Campari Tomato and Warm Beets with blue cheese dressing ($7) among the selection of starters. Entrees include six different main course-sized salads like Spinach and Chicken Waldorf ($15), Shrimp Louie ($17), and Thai Steak & Noodle Salad with avocado, mango and herbs ($17). But, if you want something hot go for the obligatory Cheeseburger ($14), that Houston's French Dip ($17), or some interesting additions like a Spinach and Cheese Omelette with potato salad and griddled toast ($15) and Mesquite Grilled Lamb Sirloin with cipollini onions and sauteed spinach ($25). There are a few vegetarian options too, among them the "Curry for Any Day" that's served with mango chutney ($16). Hillstone Group is doing curry? Yes. And they're also busting out some new desserts like Beverly's Brownie with champagne custard and Tiramisu. (All desserts are $7.) And get this, South Beverly Grill is baking their own bread. There's a long bar in the dining room complete with leather backed stools and flat-screens, but that didn't stop Hillstone's execs from dreaming up an Old Hollywood style bar right next door.
Just around the corner from glammed-up Wilshire Boulevard and the staggering Montage Hotel Beverly Hills, The Honor Bar made its shiny debut last night. While the focus is the cocktails, you can also grab lunch here and even order take-out for the office. But do stop in for one of their cocktails and be sure to get there early for a seat near the jazz trio in the back. South Beverly Grill and The Honor Bar will be open daily from 11AM until 11PM on weekdays, and Friday and Saturday until 12 midnight.
