More Walter Manzke Downtown Rumors

New, 13 comments

Earlier this year one of LA's most well-respected chefs, Walter Manzke, announced his separation from Church & State. Although he revealed plans to open his own restaurant, specific details have remained scarce adding to the exciting Manzke mystery. Where will he land and what will he cook? Back in March Eater was tipped off that the chef had settled on downtown as his neighborhood of choice, and more recently came whisperings of Asian eats coming from the mostly French-resumed chef. Anyway, one more pointer promoting Manzke's downtown project. Yesterday Jay Weston wrote that he also heard Manzke was headed downtown, specifically to 1st Street and Virgil. So the next question was, what's up for grabs down there? Eater took to the streets to investigate the scene, unfortunately nothing terribly groundbreaking to report on. Over there sits a Korean church, Korean nightclub of sorts, and Cafe Sanjang, but nothing that screams empty restaurant space. So, as always, additional tips welcome in the comments.

In other restaurant news, Jay reports that Bottega Louie is poised for expansion, which Eater read about as well on a Craigslist posting a few weeks ago, and also something about the Animal boys opening a sandwich shop near Animal. Another rumor head a while back.
