With regard to the proposed shark fin ban, last Friday CA Governor Jerry Brown signed a bill that outlaws the brutal practice of slicing fins off live sharks, although markets already stocking shark fin can sell the product until July 1, 2013. Many Chinese Americans are up in arms about the ban and feel that this is a form of "cultural discrimination." Betty Tsang, president of the Asian Food Trade Association, states, "Say if in the U.S. and California, nobody can eat shark-related products, yes, we are for it. But if you only target shark fin, whereas everybody else can utilize the other parts, then no, we think this is totally discriminative." [LAT]
