Wow. Sad sad news today. The original Hamburger Hamlet on Sunset - which first opened doors in 1950 and has since collected a loyal following from the likes of Elton John, Betty White, and Nancy Sinatra - will shutter on December 19. But wait, that's not all. IDG (Innovative Dining Group) who run BOA, Delphine, Sushi Roku, among other scene-y spaces, has purchased the ancient eatery, though no word yet on what they plan to launch.
Supposedly, the Mani Brothers (real estate group) have owned 9201 W. Sunset for several decades, and have decided not to renew The Hamlet's 20 year lease in favor of raising rent to attract in a new breed of restaurant (enter IDG). Hamlet employees (many worked there for 20+ years) have been notified about this end of the road and are understandably distraught. Other locations around town have shuttered over the past few years, now the Pasadena and Sherman Oaks restaurants remain. [EaterWire]
