Touring Freddy Smalls Bar and Kitchen

Elizabeth Daniels 12/11

Despite exterior signage which still bears the name El Sarape Mexican Restaurant, as of Monday Freddy Smalls Bar & Kitchen has taken over. Inside, the mostly white and black hued space feels classically American with shiny brick and tile walls, booths and perched bar tables, and oscillating ceiling fans for warmer weather. As previously mentioned, this is the neighborhood restaurant and bar opened by The Counter founder Jeff Weinstein. To run his unfussy American kitchen he hired chef Charlie Parker (formerly of Plum in Oakland) and consulting chef Jeremy Fox (Ubuntu) who is likely opening his own spot in LA. The restaurant itself was named after a piece of stained glass uncovered in the space which had the name "Freddy's" on it. Apparently at one point another restaurant with that name resided here.
