While LA claims fame to burgers and sushi, this here city falls short in other areas like bagels and pizza by the slice. Or, well, it did fall short on the pizza front until Giuseppe "Joe" Vitale, former son-in-law of Pino Pozzuoli (owner of the original Joe's Pizza on Carmine Street, previously Bleecker Street in NYC), opened SoCal pizzerias under the name "Joe's Pizza." Oh, and for those who didn't know, Pino sued Joe not too long ago for trademark infringement. Pino's famous pizzeria is unrelated to those Joe opened in Santa Monica and WeHo, though Joe did work at the NY originial. So, while the LA spots are not Joe's Pizza, they are Joe's Pizza. If that makes sense.
Anyway, the point of this all is that both of Joe's pizza shops have proven wildly successful (especially post midnight), and now the contract is almost complete for a third outpost in the former Numero Uno cafe next door to Playhouse on Hollywood Blvd. Considering the dearth of edible late night food in this area and all of the Hollywood night owls out and about, Joe will probably kill it here in Hollywood as well. In other news, changes afoot at Playhouse's retro diner Sweet Love Hangover, stay tuned.
