Los Angeles Takes on German Beer and Bites

Around the streets of LA, it's like a German invasion these days. Perhaps Wurstkuche is due credit for kickstarting the trend with its sausage and craft beer digs that launched in 2008, but since then, and more recently, we've seen the addition of Broadway Alehouse (went for that whole sausage and beer thing, previously known as Fifth Amendment Alehouse), The Surly Goat, Biergarten, Berlin Currywurst (which is already planning its second location), Steingarten LA, Wurstkuche Venice, Bru Haus is on the way, and the LA Times spots yet another forthcoming sausage slinger, Kai Loebach's Currywurst hitting Fairfax. Sheesh. But wait, still one more.

Leave it to Mark and Johnny Houston (La Descarga) to pick another timely venture. They've just re-outfitted Stone Bar into the hip Harvard and Stone, and later this year they will open a beer garden on Sunset under the working title Vienna Hofbrau. Mark explains that he and his brother are a quarter German so "it's natural we branch into all of our roots." Stay tuned.
