Just a few weeks off from its projected opening date, Escuela is now soft open. Steven Arroyo's first foray into street-style Mexican cuisine (and just around the corner from his sandwich spot, Potato Chips and tapas joint, Cobras & Matadors) has more chairs on the ceiling than it does on the dining room floor. Design quirks aside, the opening menu features tacos, a few side dishes and a couple of house-made agua frescas.
Tacos are composed creations like pork chuletta (pork chops with avocado and sea salt), pork belly (with pickled onions), shrimp (with chorizo and red mojo), skin-on Branzino (with cabbage slaw), and chicken (with achiote lime marinade). Each order includes two tacos and all plates are priced between $6 and $8. Side dishes cost between $3 to $6. Open for dinner now and lunch this Saturday and Sunday, Escuela hopes to serve lunch and dinner every day starting next week.
