1) West Hollywood: Sunset Sushi has been superseded by another Japanese concept titled Shiro Kuro, or black and white in Japanese, per its website (which is colored black and white nonetheless). There are many words to describe this new eatery (other than black and white, of course) that does NOT serve sushi, and on Twitter those words are "A fashionable Tokyo style dinner, LA version. Trendy Japanese food at Modern, Casual, Cool, Hip, Nice, Cozy, Stylish place. Taste good, Looks good!" There's a grand opening party on July 15, RSVP to attend. [EaterWire]
2) Downtown: Brigham Yen reports that the owners of Mi Piace Italian Kitchen in Old Pasadena, Armen Shirvanian and Takis Markoutsis, will open Towne Food & Drink in the 16,800 square foot space operating as H Studio on the ground floor of the Watermarke apartments at 9th and Flower. Architect Mark Zeff (Delphine) will design the massive space to feel more intimate by dividing the venue into smaller areas such as a coffee bar, main dining room etc. Towne will serve "[p]an-Mediterranean cuisine from Tunisia, Andalusia, Italy, and France," check out Brigham Yen for renderings. 3) Downtown: Back in May blogdowntown discussed Vincent Terzian's (Crocker Club) next venture, Maison Grande, a Cali-French bistro located just across the street from Bottega Louie. A reader writes in with an update: "They have yet to build out the space, but the windows are currently blocked off and there has been some activity recently." For now though, the forthcoming venue is working on acquiring its liquor license. [EaterWire, blogdowntown]
