Status: Opened Aug 15
A month after sister-brother duo Bricia and Fernando Lopez announced the shutter of Pal Cabron, another sibling-run Oaxacan restaurant has taken its place. Owned by brothers Valentin and German Granja, Sabores Oaxaqueños opened August 15 with street food-focused fare. Specialties from the brothers’ hometown of Oaxaca include banana-leaf wrapped tamales with black mole; a rice water, melon and cactus drink; and chapulines (grasshoppers topped with jalapeno and tomato). The restaurant is open 7AM to 11PM-ish (emphasis on the ish), and also serves a morning menu of mostly egg dishes. Outside, Sabores Oaxaqueños still has the pink and green color scheme of Pal Cabron, and inside not much as changed either. Meanwhile, Natura, Pal Cabron's adjacent juice and ice cream cafe, remains empty but word is another Mexican ice cream spot under different management is set to open September 1.
