MID-CITY— Just a quick note on Short Cake, that previously mentioned bakery project from Nancy Silverton and Amy Pressman at the Farmers Market. Bill Thee of Thee's Continental Pastries, located for decades in the Farmers Market, was ready to finally sell his business (elephant cake and all) and once Short Order/Short Cake partner Bill Chait heard so much, he took action and this space is, in fact, where Short Cake will live. DOWNTOWN— Brigham Yen discovers that Houston-based Salata, "The Next Generation Salad Bar" will open its first location outside of Texas by the year's end at 505 Flower in the City National Plaza. Check out the cafe's super simple menu here. [Brigham Yen]

ECHO PARK— Sunset Beer Company, that new 2,000 square foot craft beer abode, has announced that it will grand open on October 15. As a reminder, husband and wife team John and Jennifer Nugent (Colorado Wine Co.), plus partners Jenna Miller-Vonah and Andrew Vonah (investors in Eagle Rock Brewery), are behind this bottle shop.
