Weekend Recap From The Taste 2011

Desserts After Dark- Charm City Cakes

Over the past four days Angelenos gathered in Beverly Hills, Hollywood, and Downtown for a taste of The Taste, LA Times and Food & Wine magazine's local food extravaganza now in its second year. Friday night kicked off with Burgers & Beer which Eater co-hosted this year, and attendees had the opportunity to vote for the top burger of the night. Not terribly surprisingly, chef Evan Funke from Rustic Canyon took home the grand prize with his brisket and short rib patty topped with Tillamook cheddar, slow cooked onions, house-made pickles, arugula, and Russian dressing.

Blue Palms Brewhouse in Hollywood took second place with a truffle burger composed of Kobe beef patty cooked in duck fat, with black truffles, blue cheese, peppers, mushrooms and onions. Interestingly, third place went to The Counter.

The weekend continued on Saturday night with Taco Tequila Tryst hosted by Roy Choi at Paramount Studios, and those who attended were treated to a sneak peek sample from Yamashiro Taco Stand (supposedly going brick and mortar)-- that line was about 20 or so deep.

On Sunday night Paramount was transformed into a Street Eats hotspot, a couple Taco Tequila Tryst vendors made a repeat appearance serving the same dish as the night before. Though two night of Guelaguetza's chicken mole was a welcome addition.

Following Street Eats, guests either decamped to Food Noir downtown or Desserts After Dark on Rodeo. Several blocks of the expensive Drive were blocked off and in the center of it all stood a Duff Goldman Charm City Cakes epic edible creation. Other notable participants included Sweet Rose Creamery and its chocolate bonbons and mini ice cream sandwiches, fonuts' assortment of faux donuts, and pricey Parmesan chocolates from swiss chocolatier Emanuel Andren. And if you haven't had your festival fill after this past weekend, don't worry, Los Angles Food & Wine hits next month.
