It comes as absolutely no surprise whatsoever to hear that Excalibur, the Medieval-themed restaurant on Figueroa, has shuttered after less than one year. New management has rejiggered the space into a "tavern-style" restaurant and sports bar called UrbanX Tavern, which opens today at 5 p.m.
Although an OpenTable page still advertises a snapshot of all that Medieval nonsense, PR states that the Medieval theme is gone (no goblets, knights, flags, medieval-style food or names) and owners have expanded the bar and added tvs and sports memorabilia. Supposedly, Excalibur's only remains are its stone walls. However, OpenTable's description of the "castle" private dining room still refers to seemingly Medieval fixtures like "hand-carved wooden tables" and "hand-made clay cups and bowls crafted by a famous potter from our hometown in Romania." The restaurant is also still pushing "feasts" for six, in addition to 40 craft beers and all night happy hour.
