Owner Andrew Meieran (The Edison) continues to discover historical artifacts as he remodels Clifton's Cafeteria into a 50,000-sqaure-foot multipurpose structure with seven eating/drinking places from a soda shoppe to a tiki bar. In addition to the oldest neon which was uncovered earlier this year, works have found "playbills from the Orpheum, advertisements for cabarets, medicine bottles, candy wrappers and silverware" from the building's various incarnations. Thusly, Meieran has decided to build a small "history room" to display the pieces.
With regard to the Cafeteria's relaunch, expect the property to open in phases, the first of which will include the basement bar and cafeteria in about five months. Other floors will follow in three month brackets ending with the top tiki bar.
'I've always seen Clifton's as its own little natural history museum,' says owner [blogdowntown]
