Down the street from a defunct Great Harvest Bread Co. is South Pasadena's newest sweet spot, a fourth location of La Monarca Bakery. The Mexican-American-style bakery, pastry shop and cafe is on an expansion streak, and South Pasadena is its newest conquest. On offer at La Monarca are a wide selection of flaky pastries and sweet breads, including traditional Mexican bolillos, pan dulce (perfect for dipping in hot chocolate or coffee), and especially for the season, La Monarca's very popular Rosca de Reyes, or King's Cake. On the savory side, the newest La Monarca offers a selection of Mexican Molletes, warm sandwiches with beans or mole and cheese. The chorizo quiche is also popular for breakfast or lunch. Open today and daily from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m.
