Bearing a logo not dissimilar to that of Pitfire Pizza and a concept very much in the vein of 800 Degrees, here comes Blaze Pizza. Conceived by Elise and Rick Wetzel (founders of Wetzel's Pretzels), backed by Maria Shriver, movie producer John Davis, and Boston Red Sox co-owner Tom Werner, and with a menu developed by Bradford Kent (Olio Pizzeria), the team will open Blaze Pizza's first location near UC Irvine in University Center on July 1 in a 2,600 square foot, 90-seat space. Then, come September 1, a second 2,800 square foot, 100-seat eatery will launch in Pasadena's Theater District.
Just like at 800 Degrees, patrons custom create their own pies down an assembly line of "artisan" ingredients, most of which cost no extra charge. Pizzas are then fired in - yes - an 800° oven for two minutes. A simple cheese pie costs $5, and a pie with toppings starts at $6.85, meanwhile, for comparisons sake, the affordable 800 Degrees charges $5.15 for a Pizza Marinara.
Oh my my, guess who is designing the restaurants? Ana Henton of MASS Architecture who JUST wrapped up Pitfire Pizza Fairfax. Apparently she's going for a "casual, current and hip" feel "using architectural notes inspired by fire and foundries." Why does that sound familiar...
To drink, just guess. Obviously craft beer and some wine selects.
As for future expansion, the plan is to open over 15 SoCal locations by the end of 2013 and franchise the concept out across the country.
