Welcome to Meanwhile, In SGV a regular feature in which TC, our fearless leader in all things San Gabriel Valley, brings word of restaurant openings, closings, and other unsung, curious neighborhood goings on.

1) Monterey Park: A second branch of Nha Trang debuted April 13 and management at Nha Trang 1 in San Gabriel confirms that the two locations are under same ownership. Nha Trang 1 is wildly popular (but vastly under air conditioned) and received a glowing review from J. Gold last year. Nha Trang 2 replaces the schizophrenic Magic Noodle/Magic Thai and will triple the original's seating capacity. There's even patio seating, a rarity for Vietnamese restaurants in the region. The menu features the same Central Vietnamese found at Nha Trang 1. 742 E Garvey Ave

2) Rosemead: Cafe Cau Vong replaces Cafe Binh Minh on Walnut Grove Ave. No new Vietnamese-style bikini cafe has opened in WSGV since the closing of Cafe Waiting. Several flatscreens carry sports, there is no menu, and the Vietnamese coffees and avocado shakes are guaranteed to cause sticker shock. New management touts "delicious coffee" and "beautiful young waitress." 3365 Walnut Grove Ave Ste B

3) Rosemead: Hai Phong Pho Ga is certified opened on Mission Drive. Located 600 feet away from Nem Nuong Ninh Hoa, a city favorite for grilled Vietnamese pork patty rolls, HP Pho Ga hopes to attract customers wishing for lighter Vietnamese chicken noodle soup. The raison d'être here seems to be the rice noodle in scalding chicken broth with a side of raw beef. 8930 Mission Dr Ste 102
