The Gilmore Family, owners of The Original Farmers Market, recently finished construction of Gilmore Station, the newest offshoot of their popular marketplace. Across Fairfax, it's anchored by Trader Joe's, and the newest location of LA's beloved Mendocino Farms, open today. Mario del Pero and Ellen Chen's gourmet sandwich market has the prime corner spot on the lot, and fills it well.
Poon Design, Mendocino Farms' partner in design for the past few years, took on this project. Though it's a different, taller, corner space, it has the same look and feel as other Mendocino Farms locations. There are grass benches, a communal table, a kids' corner, lots of chalkboard decor and plenty of green to break up all of the wood, marble and tinwork. The designers left beams and the ceiling exposed, allowing the space to feel finished but unfussy. Exterior seating is cozy, despite the busy intersection nearby, thanks to clever dividers (etched with food quotes) that give it an indoor/outdoor vibe.
There's a long sandwich counter, and plenty of space to queue. Chef/Partner Judy Han is behind the menu, which covers all of the bases as the other outposts. There are the same quirky names for sandwiches, salads, and soups plus organic sodas, kettle chips, and cow bells. Open now from 11AM to 9PM daily.
