Sounds Like Walter Manzke is Taking Over Campanile

New, 33 comments

Whoa, MAJOR news. Some may have heard the rumors of the last few months regarding Campanile and its possibly shutter/relocation. Though chef and owner Mark Peel denied so much, last night Eater received a tip that Campanile's lease has expired (for the last few months, in fact — Nancy Silverton's father owns the building) and that lo and behold chef Walter Manzke, the LA chef that everyone loves to love, is taking over the space in December. Word on the street is that Manzke's downtown concept, Republique, never panned out. Anyway, Eater immediately checked in with Manzke, and when queried about the Campanile acquisition, he responded by saying, "Yes, I am working on something new in LA. Nothing is signed yet but is very close." BOOM! If the deal comes to fruition, this will be a *MAJOR* and very exciting new addition to La Brea.

However, at the same time, a very sad loss for the city. A once staple Italian haunt opened in the late 80s by Peel and queen of bread Nancy Silverton (Mozza, Short Order) shortly after the launch of next door La Brea Bakery, Campanile has seemed to slowly fade in recent years.
